▲Beijing Botanical Garden, located in the foot of the West Hill of Beijing, has by tradition been engaged in the conservation of the native flora, especially plants from northern, northeastern and northwestern China. Its attention is also concentrated on research, public education and recreation. Excellent displays are made monthly in the main conservatory, penjing (bonsai) garden, the arboretum and 11 outdoor gardens. The Botanical Garden has a collection of nearly 8500 plant species and varieties from different parts both from home and abroad, which is the largest site for conservation among the botanical gardens in China.
▲Fragrance Hills, situated on the east foot of Western Hills, not far from Beijing Botanical Garden, covers an area of 160 hectares. With surrounding green hills stretching up and down, its highest peak is 557 m and is shaped in an incense burner. The name of the park derives not from the fresh air or aroma in the area, but in the shape of the hills themselves. 2 big stones lie on its peak and from a distance, on a mist-shrouded day, it looks much like a three-legged incense burner. The groves of apricots, peaches, pears and lilacs may also be reason for the name Fragrant Hills.
