Former Residence of Lao She
Located on the north side of West Dengshikou Street, the Former Residence of Lao She, a renowned modern novelist and playwright, is a traditional quadrangle home with two central courtyards. Lao She bought the house in 1949 upon his return from the United States and spent most of his last 13 years at this house. It was here he wrote 23 works including a famous drama Fang Zhenzhu. Lao She"s wife moved out of the house and donated it to the state together with great amounts of his manuscripts. Soon, the house was turned into a museum and listed as one of the historical and culture sites under the state protection.

Lao She (1899 to 1966), his former name is Shu Qingchun, his other name is She Yu. He was a native Beijing Resident. He is a very famous author in the modern time. He once acted as preliminary school president, middle school teacher and University professor. During the period of Chinese people"s resistance to Japanese aggression, he was in charge of the All China Art Cycle Anti-Japanese Aggression Association, he make a positive contribution in uniting the vast artists to participating in Anti-Japanese Aggression dissemination. After liberation, he took the positions as Vice Chairman of China Literature Association, Vice President of China Author"s Association and President of Beijing Literature Association. On December 1951, he was rewarded the title as "People"s Artist" by the Beijing People"s Government. Lao She created lots of literature works that enjoyed great popularity in his life, such as Four Generations Living in the Same House, Camel Xiang Zi, Tea House, Long Xu Gou and etc.
