Dear Clio,
This is just a mail to say thank you for your help. We were very pleased with your service as well as our fantastic guide, Grace, in Xian.
We had a great time, saw a lot of things and enjoyed the friendliness of all people we met.
We will certainly recommend other friends to contact you for assistance.
Thanks again!
Louise
Busy life and work prevents us from paying attention to the natural environment around us. The plants, the animals, the birds; it seems like a long time since you heard birds singing outside your window.
It does not mean that you cannot see other birds in the city. As an outdoor leisure activity, pick a weekend day to the outskirts of town and you will see less common birds, and even some on the National Protection List. Yeya Lake is the largest wetland bird habitat near the city. The best time to watch birds is between 6am and 7am and 6pm to 8pm, when birds leave for food or come back for rest. Quadrangle courtyards were built nearby to offer accommodation and dining for birdwatchers.

Itinerary:
Pick up from your hotel in Beijing around 6:00am. First drive to Wild Duck Lake (Yeyahu) near the Guanting Reservoir in Yanqing County in Northwestern suburban Beijing. Yeyahu Lake Wetland Natural Reserve in Yanqing District is surrounded by mountains and the Great Wall. The wetlands are rich in fish, shrimp and grass. Many species of waterfowl live there. The reserve is home to more than 240 kinds of fowl, including five listed as China’s most protected species and 34 of the second grade. It is an ideal stop for migratory birds eading south or north every fall and spring. There are thousands of birds that migrate across China. In the reserve, thousands of swans, grus grus, geese, ducks, egrets and cranes flock. From October and April, thousands of grus grus live in the reserve throughout the winter. In summertime, some waterfowl stay in the reserve to hatch new offspring. The reserve is also home to reed warblers and orioles.
After the bird watching in Wild Duck Lake, then visit the Wild Duck Lake Wetland Museum. The museum contains a great number of sample birds and animals which once lived in this area. Then drive to Sahe Reservoirs in Changping District. Shahe Reservoir or Shahe River is a big lake with the 21 kilometres long, 100 metres wide which passes through Changping District and enters a dam into Chaoyang District, where it blends into the Wenyuhe River. Due to the improvement of the environment along the river, some migratory birds coming back to the north from the South China stop here in spring, hence a nice place for bird watching. The dam on the river is an ideal place for your to start your exploration either for birding or sightseeing. There is also a big island in the reservoir, linked to the bank by a simple bridge. The island is nicknamed Bird Island by the bird-lovers because it is home to many unnamed birds. On the Sahe reservoirs, if you are lucky enough, you will see wild ducks, swans, egrets, pheasants and much more. After finishing the bird watching tour, transferred back to your hotel in Beijing.

Beijing Bird Watching Society http://www.chinabirdnet.org/beijing.html
Beijing Bird Watching Society (BBWS) (in preparation) was founded by active and keen birdwatchers in Beijing. It is committed to forming bird watching groups in Beijing and promoting local bird watching activities. A number of members of BBWS have a professional background on ornithology, ecology, environmental conservation or education.
Other good spot for bird-watching Baihebao Lake--Around 50 million cubic metres of water from the lake was recently diverted to Miyun Reservoir to relieve Beijing's drinking water shortage. The water's lower level attracts lots of wild birds to look for food in the lake. Thousands of different birds come to the lake everyday and their dance in the sky presents a fantastic scene for visitors. Wuling Mountain--About 200 kilometers east of Beijing, also boasts most of the mountain birds that can be found around Beijing.
They include Koklass pheasant, white-backed woodpecker, and healthy populations of Chinese leaf warblers, grey-sided thrush and Chinese narcissus flycatchers.
It is still a little cold now to visit the 3,200-metre high mountain. You can find snow on the mountain top. The birds stay much longer though and we suggest you wait until after April when it becomes warmer and many birds flock to the mountain.
