Shichahai Bar Area: Shichahai consists of three continuous lakes, Qianhai, Houhai and Jishuitan. Lying in the central area of old Beijing, and possessing natural beauty, Shichahai was a good place for living and entertainment. Bars in Shichahai obey the rules— they have their modern glamour and a Beijing touch. With pubs packing and spreading around, you may finally get lost in choices. But remember, when you are here you are looking for specials and a distinctive sip of Beijing.
Bell Tower: Bell Tower is located due north of the Drum Tower. It was built in the 9th year of the Zhi Yuan period of the Yuan Dynasty (1272).The Present building, coumrising a base and an upper storey with a double roof of grey tiles, was reconstructed in the 10th year under reign of Qian Long (in 1745). The tower base is square and it covers an area of 1,377 square meters. It is 8.6 meters high and 35.5 meters wide and built completely with green bricks. The tower is a brick and timber structure and 36 meters high.
Zongren Bai: Mr.Dacheng Bai, a local folk craftsman, famous for making "Zongren", a traditional handicraft, a kind the figurines of drama characters made by the hair of a pig or a horse, cloth and silk, listed a city-level intangible cultural heritage in Beijing. He could make the figurines living by knocking the plate which take the figurines.
Making jiaozi: Lunch will be arranged at Mr. Kang's courtyard home. The host will show you in learning how to make jiaozi. Jiaozi (Chinese Dumpling) is a traditional Chinese Food, which is essential during holidays in Northern China. Chinese dumpling becomes one of the most widely loved foods in China. Place dumpling skin in the palm of your hand. Dip a finger in cold water and wet the edges of the dumpling skin. Spoon some filling into the middle of the skin. Fold dumpling in half. Put top of semi-circle together. Push in on both sides of dumpling. Bend one half of each "top" and press against middle edge of dumpling. Seal all edges of dumpling. Your dumpling should look like a half-moon with a big bulge in the middle! To cook, drop into a big pot of boiling water under they float to the surface. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Enjoy these dumplings you have made!
Beijing Opera: Hand-on experience with facial make-up of Beijing Opera and learning the basic knowledge of Beijing Opera. Facial make-up enables audiences to grasp the personality of a character portrayed and the character's social status at a glance. Beijing Opera makes use of different colors in facial make-up to exaggerate or distort an actor's features. Originally, only there were three colors in use -- red, white and black. Each color has its own symbolic meaning. Red means loyalty, integrity and courage; black indicates a serious and taciturn disposition, including strength and roughness; white tells a crafty and suspicious character. Later, other colors were gradually formed, such as purple -- a sign of solemnity, serenity and a sense of justice; yellow, showing intelligence and calculation or bravery when used in warrior roles; blue representing uprightness and stubbornness; green shows bravery and irascibility; and gold and silver are sometimes used on the faces of immortals, demons and monsters. Itinerary:
Pick up from your hotel by your private tour guide and car or van around 9:00am. First drive to Shichahai bar area. Shichahai area is a centraly preserved zone showcasing the life of old Beijing. It is comprised of three-lake area: Qian Hai Lake, meaning Front Sea; Hou Hai Lake, meaning Back Sea and Xi Hai Lake, meaning Western Sea. Lots of bars are clustered in the Shichahai area or along the Shichahai Lakeshore. Tale a pedicab riding around Shichahai area. Then visit the Bell Tower. It dates from 1420, ascending the big drum tower and having bird's eye view of the surrounding communities of hutongs and siheyuan. After climbing the bell tower, visit Zongren Bai, a traditional "Zongren", a kind the figurines of drama characters made from the hair of a pig or a horse, cloth and silk, listed a city-level intangible cultural heritage in Beijing. Lunch will be arranged at Mr. Kang's courtyard home. During the lunch time, the host will teach you how to make Jiaozi ( Chinese Dumpling ). After the home-made lunch, start to have a hand-on experience of the facial make-up of Peking Opera. The makeup expert will tell you the basic knowledge of Beijing Opera. You either have a model for you to do the makeup or you yourself serve a model to experience the makeup on the spot. After the tour, transferred back to your hotel in Beijing.
