Day by day itinerary:

Pick up from your hotel at 7:30am and start our journey. Drive 130 km and get to Jimingyi. After exploring Jimingyi, we move on to Xuanhua 40 km away. After lunch, visit Liao Dynasty Tomb Murals. Then drive to the center of the Xuanhua town. Visit the two famous towers: Qinyuan Mansion & Zensuo Mansion. Return to Beijing around 7:00pm.

Jimingyi: an ancient post station in Huailai County, Hebei Province, dates back to the Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368), and had been a major transit post station on the route from Beijing to Datong, Shanxi Province, until 1913. The ancient post station still retains its original layout.

Xuanhua:both Jimingyi and Xuanhua are part of the city of Zhangjiakou, situated in northwest Hebei Province, 200 Km away from Beijing.

Liao Dynasty Tomb Murals at Xuanhua: the paintings of celestial objects, drawn on tomb ceilings and framed with Buddhist motifs, show striking similarities to esoteric Star Mandalas and demonstrate the acceptance of Buddhist horoscopic astrology by the laity. Executed during the Liao-Jin transition period, the Xuanhua astronomical paintings include the earliest illustrations yet known of zodiacal symbols in the popular pantheon of East Asia. The paintings are important clues to the synthesis of Buddhist and Chinese views of, and the ways to deal with, life after death.
